Responsible Wool Standard (RWS): Sustainable Wool for Luxury Tailoring

Luxury menswear begins with exceptional materials. Today, choosing the finest wool also means understanding how it was produced. The Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) is one of the leading global certifications that ensures wool is sourced with respect for animal welfare, the environment, and full supply chain traceability.
What Is RWS?
The Responsible Wool Standard is an independent certification that verifies wool comes from farms committed to:
- High standards of animal welfare
- Responsible land management
- Sustainable farming practices
- Traceability from farm to finished fabric
Every stage of the supply chain is independently audited, giving manufacturers and customers greater confidence in the origin of the wool.

Animal Welfare and Sustainability
RWS-certified farms must provide proper care for sheep and use humane farming practices. The standard prohibits mulesing, a controversial procedure in which skin is removed from a sheep's hindquarters to help prevent flystrike. Instead, RWS promotes alternative methods that prioritize animal welfare while protecting the health of the flock.
Certified farms are also required to manage their land responsibly by protecting biodiversity, maintaining healthy soil, and conserving natural resources.

Why It Matters in Tailoring
A bespoke or made-to-measure garment is designed to last for many years. As responsibly sourced wool becomes increasingly available, it complements the philosophy of bespoke tailoring by combining timeless craftsmanship with higher environmental and animal welfare standards.
While RWS does not measure the quality of the wool itself, many of the world's leading mills now offer RWS-certified fabrics without compromising softness, durability, or elegance.

Our Philosophy
At Uniontailors, we believe sustainability begins with creating garments that are made to last. Investing in quality tailoring means buying fewer garments, enjoying them for many years, and reducing unnecessary consumption.
In Colombia, RWS-certified wool fabrics are only beginning to become available, and currently only a limited number of fabric collections carry this certification. As more renowned mills expand their RWS-certified offerings, we look forward to providing our clients with an even wider selection of responsibly sourced fabrics.
We carefully follow these developments because we believe exceptional tailoring should be accompanied by responsible material choices whenever possible.
True luxury is not only defined by how a garment looks, but also by the values behind the materials used to create it.
